Part 3
As I drove into the City at 10:45 PM on a weeknight, I played a game with myself, as if this was still all just a fantasy, as if this was all a delusion. “I’m only driving into the city,” I told myself. “I’m not making any commitments,” I said the words out loud to no one. “I am just driving.”
I pulled into the garage that Heather had told me about. As the PLA (Parking Lot Attendant) moved on with my car, I silently told myself, “I’m just parking my car here. I’m just going to walk to the corner, and see what there is to see.”
It didn’t take long before my car was safely parked in an underground facility in central Manhattan. It was a (relatively) quiet street. The PLA had the typical look of disinterest and blaze. He did not look me in the eye. Is that a conceit of the city? Is everyone in on the joke, except us ‘rubes’ from New Jersey? I couldn’t help but wonder how many cars he had parked for ‘first timers’.
It was late July, or early August, but it was a hot night either way. I had spoken to my wife earlier in the evening. I told her then that I was going to be going to bed early. I told her that I loved her and that I missed her. We had a nice chat that lasted for a while. She filled me in on all that the kids had done that day. All the time we spoke I was thinking about my plans for after. I would make the call. I would set the appointment. I would get the directions. I had a phone Mistress that I had spoken to for years – Mistress Twilight – who seemed constantly surprised that I had not taken the plunge into the NYC Domination scene, given my proximity to the city.
